High gasoline prices spawning songs, signs, symbolic acts
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
The Associated Press -- PITTSBURGH (AP) — Americans facing rising gasoline and diesel prices are cycling about, saddling up, singing out and, sometimes, resorting to violent symbolism.

Dozens of Alabama students are bicycling up to 10 miles each way to their rural high school. An Indiana man was arrested for belting out a protest song, "Price Gouge'n," from the roof of a convenience store. A sign-maker in Kentucky is riding his horse on business errands. And a Tennessee sheriff is investigating a more disturbing protest: a slain deer hanging from a gasoline station sign.

Those actions are being done in the name of protest, but three western Pennsylvania school officials who plan to walk 216 miles to raise awareness of the factors driving up gas prices don't want to call it a protest march.

the best protest would be cutting back of fuel use, but we as a society are too lazy to do so

I only see this thing getting more and more out of hand and I don't see any stopping of it. As the big wigs get richer and richer things are going to get worse for us the low income and we pay the price! Nothing is ever for free and these checks we are getting well heck that is not free money it will go toward buying fuel to get you back and forth to work. Who do they think they are kidding. I may just buy me a bike and a backpack with mine. Instead of putting it back in the hands of the big wig rich oil companies!

Riding 12 miles two times a day on a bike if it is flat is really not that hard for a teenager. Maybe it will keep them out of trouble and not sit around and terrorize the neighborhood like the teens boys in my neighborhood do.

Doesn't the begining of publishing songs about a current problem mean that public dissent, and possibly some sort of action, is coming? Hope so.

I'd like to see lawmakers consider a surcharge for excess energy consumption on the sale of every SUV and monster pickup. We got along without them before they were made AND we usually had larger families...although our backsides were generally smaller, too.

I'm not against protests for a GOOD cause... but im not thinking the right people are going to see these or care. They will continue to rob us with high prices that fill their pockets and laugh when they see the protests that dont hurt them.

It seems like nothing short of military/physical action against them would affect them at all. And thats not too likely.

However, threatening the lives of the corporate moneymongers responsible, and/or oil cartel countries with military action could possibly work. Without a strong serious action soon, we will continue to lose what little we have left.

Until this country wakes up to the fact that we are addicted to oil, the problem will continue. "We have found the problem, and the problem is us!" An addict is usually the last one to admit they have a problem, but once they do, they have to make a choice; Die in their addiction, or get cured.

I for one want an "affordable" electric car, with the optional Hydrogen fuel cell, which would be used for longer trips. Personally I like the idea and the look of the Tesla, but $100,000+ for a car is not in my budget.

There are still a lot of people out there who grumble about the price of gas, but still won't change their driving habits. (Mostly not people who visit this web site, I'm sure.) Spreading the word about why gas is so high, and how much it's hurting some people, might actually wake some of them up.

Symbolic acts and protests don't do anything to help. If you want lower prices, you have to lower your personal demand by making a permanent change to use less gas.

Time to crash the oil market and suspend trading if it goes up more the the National inflation rate.
