Germany Extends Nuclear Plants’ Life

NY Times -- Germany extends the life spans of their 17 nuclear plants while alternative energy sources are developed.

New taxes levied on utility companies will be used to help develop renewable energy sources. Germany can not afford to get rid of nuclear power because “It is a bridge”.

German law, passed by a previous government in 2002, requires the last nuclear power plant to be shut by 2022. That decision, bitterly resented by the nuclear energy companies, was largely supported by the German public, which has a deep aversion to anything nuclear, a sentiment that intensified after the nuclear accident at Chernobyl.

A survey in July found that 81 percent of Germans said the country could not do entirely without nuclear power, up from 59 percent five years ago.

"Nuclear energy is one of the cheapest energy sources, if we can handle the radioactive waste disposal problems. "

This is totally a political problem. I've been to Yucca Mountain, and it's the perfect place. Coal plants, on the other hand, spread radioactivity into the air over all of us, and create incredibly much more waste.

Jeff1944: can you explain what you mean? When the law was passed it was very much supported by the people in Germany. And living in Europe before and after Chernobyl, I can tell you, it was very intense. And everyone pretty much preferred for nuclear to go away -- if there had been any alternative.

Sounds like poor legislative decision making based on emotion rather than facts?

What ever type of energy sources are developed the government will put a heavy tax on it.

This is not good public policy. We need all types of energy now and in the future.

I would be surprised if they don't extend that deadline again, when it gets closer to 2022.

Why not just put a bunch of solar subs around, manned by the military, and put 'em into the grid? Those things last 30 YEARS!

There are so many options open to us.

We must not get caught into one mantra of "Drill, Baby, Drill"

Please, let us all explore the energy that the future can give to everyone.

The options are many if only we keep our minds open.

We have to use everything we have and can develop for at least 20 years by then we might be able to start gaining significantly on having enough more green energy to reduce petroleum dependency.

The USA can't afford to get rid of nuclear power plants either. Some of ours are now beyond their designed life span, like Vermont's one nuke plant, and are not aging gracefully. Quite a contrast in attitude on nuclear power from Germany to France.

Plant life is whatever you declare it to be. The longer the life the longer the depreciation schedule, in the U S that would mean higher taxes.

On this one the Germans are not thinking with their heads. They have just lowered their competitiveness in the world economy. I guess that is good for the US.

If you look at all the available energy sources and the cost to produce each, nuclear is at the top. All others are not even close. If we really want to break our dependence on oil, nuclear would allow it and be cheaper to.

Practice economics not politics. You can't make alternative energy sources affordable or reliable just by Government mandate.

Nearby; the Germans' old French friends have more atomic power plants that save a (metric) tonne of carbon dioxide generation; a nuclear navy and they are proud to be different. Guess the European Union is somewhat like ours.
