EPA: 1M gallons of oil may be in Mich. river

MSNBC / Associated Press -- BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Federal officials now estimate that more than 1 million gallons of oil may have spilled into a major river in southern Michigan, and the governor is sharply criticizing clean-up efforts as "wholly inadequate."

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released the update Wednesday night, shortly after Gov. Jennifer Granholm lambasted attempts to contain the oil flowing down the Kalamazoo River. She warned of a "tragedy of historic proportions" if the oil reaches Lake Michigan, which is still at least 80 miles downstream from where oil has been seen.

Granholm called on the federal government for more help, saying resources being marshaled by the EPA and Enbridge Inc., which owns the pipeline that leaked the oil, were "wholly inadequate."

on second thought, maybe Pig Oil paid the media to suppress the news or there wasn't enough "public interest" to sell such news to the public?

Is it just me or does it seem strange that all of a sudden there's been an increase of oil spills and pipelines bursting and oil wells leaking or blowing up and now another ship loaded with oil crashes??? Sounds fishy to me!!

Why do we cry to the feds, when they typically drag their feet. Get it done on your own end, it's your state!

We definitely need to have better oversight and inspections in this area. Two serious oil spills within 3 months of each other is not exceptable.

A million gallons sounds like a lot. It is also a very round number.

This story is almost 3 days old. I'm sure I heard on the news today that the spill was contained and would not reach Lake Michigan. Still a bad situation.

I don't believe our government has the assets available to handle any major spill. But this Michigan one should never have happened. The EPA should require better monitoring and oversight of pipelines and requiring better contingency planning for major "worst case scenario" spills.

an example again of how Big Oil cares more about bottom line then what is needed to be done in the case of a spill. Stay Classy Big Oil!

Have oil companies just given up safety precautions and just decided that leaks are an acceptable cost of doing business?

EPA needs more testing on air and water samples???? Most people can see the oil without tests. Typical foot dragging.

Yep, the spill in the river is Obama's fault. I heard he ate a few babies, drew a mustache on the Statue of Liberty, and criticized NASCAR fans, too.

Bush-43 was an oil man (not a very successful one, but he was an oil man). More critically, the Brains Behind the Bush (Dick Cheney) spent most of his service receiving deferred compensation from oilfield service company Halliburton (OK, the spell check is saying "Hallucination" as a spelling).

Obama, on the other hand, gets a free pass. He's a community organizer. The people who obsess on that part of his resume probably don't know he had a staff of 13 and an annual budget of several hundred thousand dollars.

The oil companies are so rich that they don't really give a rip how much they spill or where. They seem to think they are above the law and above God and nature.

Seems there is an unlimited quantity of "peak oil" and the problem these days is not how to get to it but how to contain it and keep it in the ground!
If the price rises I hope it is not because of clean up cost.
